October 2007, Sunnyvale, CA—Dionex announces the release of Application Note 189: Determination of Explosive Compounds in Drinking Water using Parallel-HPLC with UV Detection. Concerns over the persistence and toxicity of explosive compounds and their degradation byproducts in the environment, along with increased vigilance concerning national security issues, has prompted the need for a robust method that can quickly separate a large group of these contaminants in municipal drinking water. Thermal stability and volatility are limiting factors when using traditional gas chromatography (GC) for explosives analysis in water. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is not subject to these same limitations; therefore, it is ideally suited for low-level determinations of these contaminants in aqueous samples. Used in conjunction with the Dionex UltiMate® 3000 HPLC system, the Acclaim Explosives E1 and E2 columns can separate and provide baseline resolution of 14 explosive compounds and byproducts. These columns provide complimentary selectivity for quantitation and confirmation of all compounds listed in US EPA Method 8330 (Nitroaromatics and Nitroamines by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)). The parallel x2 Dual UltiMate 3000 HPLC system used in this Application Note allows the samples to be run simultaneously on each column, minimizing sample handling and analysis time.
