Dionex announces an improved method for separating polar compounds not well retained or resolved on conventional LC columns. Application Note 198: Determination of Urea and Allantoin in Cosmetics Using the Acclaim Mixed-Mode HILIC Column describes the use of a new Acclaim® column with both hydrophilic-interaction and reversed-phase characteristics for the separation of small hydrophilic polar molecules.
The application describes the separation of allantoin and urea, two highly polar molecules that are commonly used as ingredients for cosmetics. These compounds cannot be separated using conventional reversed-phase columns, but are easily separated on the Acclaim Mixed-Mode HILIC column. Optimization of the sample preparation solvent and mobile phase yields good resolution and sharp, symmetrical peaks with run times under 6 min. The Mixed-Mode HILIC column should be able to separate a variety of polar molecules that cannot be analyzed using conventional columns.
