U.S. EPA Approves Dionex RFIC-ER Systems for Compliance Monitoring of Drinking Water

September 2008, Sunnyvale, CA—Dionex Corporation announces the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approval of Reagent-Free Ion Chromatography systems with Eluent Regeneration (RFIC-ER systems) as an Alternative Test Procedure (ATP) for Methods 300.0 and 300.1. The methods cover compliance monitoring of drinking water. According to the EPA Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water’s Technical Support Center, chromatographic systems that use eluent regeneration are acceptable for use in the original methods “as long as all original method quality control parameters are met”. The EPA ruled that these methods are useful for drinking water compliance monitoring performed under National Primary Drinking Water Regulations.

RFIC-ER systems use the suppressor to regenerate returning eluent, allowing a single preparation of eluent to be used for up to four weeks. Such systems use carbonate, carbonate/bicarbonate, or MSA eluents for isocratic separations. With the introduction of RFIC systems in 2003, Dionex revolutionized IC by simplifying it: eliminating the need for manual preparation of eluent and regenerant while increasing the power and capabilities of ion analysis. Eluent regeneration delivers the consistency and easy operation of RFIC systems to users with systems dedicated to ion analysis of samples containing low to moderate concentration matrices. The ATP using eluent regeneration for Methods 300.0 and 300.1 allow laboratories conducting compliance monitoring of drinking water to take advantage of the ease-of-use and reproducibility of RFIC-ER systems.
