Simplified Automated Determination of PAHs in Edible Oils

April 2008, Sunnyvale, CA— Dionex announces a new procedure for automating and simplifying the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in edible oils. Application Note 196: Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Edible Oils by Donor-Acceptor Complex Chromatography (DACC)-HPLC with Fluorescence Detection describes an improved method for on-line matrix elimination and solvent exchange that can be performed automatically on an UltiMate® 3000 x2 Dual HPLC system . This new method eliminates manual preparation and solvent exchange steps required by previously reported methods. Chromeleon® Chromatography Management software integrates control of clean-up, separation, data collection, and data analysis.

PAHs are carcinogens that occur in a variety of foods, including edible oils used for cooking or as ingredients in food production. PAHs may contaminate edible oils through incomplete combustion of organic substances during manufacture, or through environmental contamination of plant materials used to make these oils. The European Union has set a limit of 2.0 µg/kg of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in edible oils, as BaP has been determined to be a good indicator of overall PAH contamination. Edible oils are difficult to analyze, because the oil matrix overloads HPLC columns. DACC stationary phases can be used to retain PAHs, allowing the matrix to be flushed to waste. The capabilities of the UltiMate 3000 x2 Dual system allow automatic switching between the DACC sample preparation column and the analytical column, and between the different mobile phases required for matrix elimination and analysis. This automated, on-line method can determine PAH concentration in approximately 80 min, far shorter than the 8–10 h required by traditional methods.
