Determination of Glycols and Alcohols in Fermentation Broths

August 2007, Sunnyvale, CA—Dionex announces the release of Application Note 188: Determination of Glycols and Alcohols in Fermentation Broths Using Ion-Exclusion Chromatography with Pulsed Amperometric Detection. Fermentation is used for production in a number of industries, including food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and fuels. Fermentation broths should be monitored for cellular energy sources, desired products, byproducts, and contaminants. Application Note 188 (AN 188) adds a new method to Dionex's range of fermentation broth monitoring capabilities. This method for directly monitoring alcohols and glycols in fermentation broths uses electrochemical detection with the recently developed disposable platinum electrode and a smaller format IonPac® ICE-AS1 column (4 x 250 mm).

The ICS-3000 can be used to monitor fermentation broths for sugars (AN 122) and amino acids (AN 150, AU 152) using electrochemical detection with a gold electrode and high-resolution anion-exchange column; anions and organic acids (AN 123) using suppressed conductivity detection and an IonPac column; and now alcohols and glycols using this recently developed method.
