Melamine in Food

From pet food to milk products, melamine contamination has endangered the lives of thousands of children, adults, and animals.

The adulteration of milk powder in China has lead to a global recall of infant milk formula, chocolates, biscuits, cakes, and other milk-based products. Melamine, which is used to make plastics and fertilizer, was incorporated into milk products in order to cut costs and artificially inflate the protein level readings. This in turn is causing infants to develop kidney problems such as kidney stones. All the dairy products that potentially contain melamine will need to be recalled and analytically tested for the adulterant. Regulations requiring screening for melamine may have to be enacted to prevent future adulteration.
