Analysis of Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Toilet bowl cleaners use cationic surfactants and sodium hypochlorite as disinfectants. Because the Acclaim® Surfactant column has some weak anion-exchange functionality, the selectivities of anionic and cationic species can be adjusted by changing the ionic strength of the mobile phase. In the first example, high ionic strength causes chloride to elute early, allowing the PEG to be resolved. In the second example, lower ionic strength causes quaternary surfactants to elute earlier, resolving them from the nonionic surfactants.
