Acclaim OA Silica-Based Columns for the Separation of Organic Acids

The Acclaim Organic Acid (OA) column is recommended for the quality assurance of foods, beverages, and pharmaceuticals. The Acclaim OA offers unparalleled separations of hydrophilic aliphatic and aromatic organic acids using 100% aqueous low pH, plus solvent gradient reversed-phase HPLC with UV detection. The Acclaim OA column line features a patented polar-embedded stationary phase that is optimized and use-tested for hydroxy aliphatic organic acid separations.

  • Use-tested to guarantee consistent hydrophilic organic acid separations
  • Compatible with 100% aqueous mobile phases, optimum for hydrophilic organic acid retention
  • Hydrolytic stability at low-pH conditions, optimum for reversed-phase retention of organic acids
  • Ideal selectivity for separating a wide spectrum of organic acids, such as hydrophilic aliphatic acids, C1 to C7 aliphatic acids, some amino acids, as well as aromatic acids
  • Recommended for quality assurance testing for foods, beverages, pharmaceuticals, chemical intermediates, and environmental samples

Guaranteed Organic Acid Separations

The Acclaim OA can be operated at low pH and at 100% aqueous mobile phases, conditions ideal for retaining and separating a wide spectrum of organic acids. Acclaim OA columns undergo extensive testing to ensure column-to-column reproducibility, and are shipped with certificates of analysis detailing these tests.

Consistent Performance with 100% Aqueous Mobile Phases

Due to their solubility, many polar organic acids are better retained and resolved on reversed-phase HPLC columns using aqueous mobile phases, without the addition of organic solvents. The typical phases used in reversed-phase chromatography are very hydrophobic and tend to self-associate when using 100% aqueous conditions, leading to a reduced retention of analytes. The Acclaim OA column exhibits consistent retention with 100% aqueous mobile phases by incorporating a polar functional group into the silane linkage near the surface of the silica particle. This polar group allows water to penetrate and hydrate the silica surface, preventing self-association of the carbon chains.

Wide Range of Applications

The Acclaim OA is an exceptional column for determining small hydrophilic organic acids, including acetic, citric, iso-citric, formic, fumaric, lactic, malic, succinic, and tartaric acids. With the addition of organic solvents, this column easily separates the C1 to C7 aliphatic acids, as well as hydrophilic aromatic acids. The OA is valuable for analyzing food and beverage products, plating baths for semiconductor manufacturing and QA testing of chemicals, and chemical intermediates used in plastics and polymer manufacturing.

Minimal Sample Preparation

For traditional reversed-phase HPLC with UV detection of organic acids plus uncharged molecules, the Acclaim OA columns have unparalleled performance. Reversed-phase chromatography often allows direct injection without sample preparation, other than simple dilution of the product or reaction solution. Samples containing anionic surfactants or anionic dyes, impossible to analyze using anion exchange with conductivity detection, are ideally determined using the Acclaim OA with UV detection. The sensitivity for the Acclaim OA methods is in the low-ppm range for small aliphatic acids such as acetic acid. For organic acid determinations requiring trace-level ppb concentrations, consider Dionex anion-exchange methods with conductivity detection, IC/MS or LC/MS.

Manufacturing Reproducibility

Each Acclaim OA column is manufactured to stringent specifications to ensure column-to-column reproducibility. Each column is shipped with a lot validation sheet showing the test results and specifications for the lot of bonded silica packed into the column and an individual test chromatogram validating performance for organic acid selectivity. The lot validation tests include a chromatography-based metals test and organic acids resolution tests. Production columns are individually tested for capacity and efficiency, and closely monitored for metals contamination.
